Coimbatore girl knifed in classroom, attacker flees

COIMBATORE: A 17-year-old first-year student of a private college in Coimbatore on Thursday was injured after she was attacked with a knife by her boyfriend inside the classroom following an argument over her speaking to another student.

The victim, studying B.Tech IT at a private college in Saravanampatti, was in love with an 18-year-old student from the same institution. Police said another student from the same college had proposed to her, but she declined the proposal and continued to interact with him in a friendly manner.

Upon learning about the matter, her boyfriend requested that she stop talking to the other student, but she reportedly continued her friendly interactions. He reportedly expressed strong displeasure over her interactions, leading to frequent arguments between the two.

On Thursday morning, seeing her talking to the other student in class, he confronted her, resulting in a tense argument. Suddenly, the boy took out a knife from his bag and attacked the girl on her cheeks and hands.

Police said the victim cried out for help in seething pain, while some frightened students ran out of the classroom for safety. Though a few male students attempted to restrain him, he managed to flee from the classroom.

The injured girl was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Saravanampatti and then shifted to another hospital. The city police have registered a case, and further inquiry is under way.
