In a lighter vein, Cooperation Minister Sellur K Raju during an informal interaction on Thursday wondered what was wrong with Egyptian onions and why there was a hue and cry over the particular variety of the vegetable.

The Minister, further in jest, said that all the speculation caused even the Chief Minister to cast aspersions on the quality of Egyptian onions.

“Finally, we took samples to show him. CM Edappadi K Palaniswami who tasted the Egyptian onions said that they were good,” the Minister said, adding that the CM’s household was now consuming the imported onions.

Vouching for the quality of Egyptian onions, the Minister recommended them to be good for the heart due to its high sulphur content.

The shelf life of imported onion is also higher than the indigenous variety, the Minister said, reiterating the reporters to sample it and then report on the matter.

To a query on the spurt in onion theft cases, the Minister said, “I don’t know how to comment on those who steal onions. Thieves are there since the ancient days and now they are targeting onions,” the Minister rued. He further recommended the public to lodge theft complaints in the event of such incidents, inviting peals of laughter.

Possibly taking the humour element to a higher level, the Minister prior to the press meet asked officials to be prepared for the briefing with three trays full of Egyptian onions.
