Bronze idols stolen from temple near Kumbakonam

Police are on the hunt for the thieves who stole three bronze idols from a temple near Kumbakonam on Saturday.

The doors of Arulmigu Dharmaraja temple in Semmangudi near Kumbakonam were locked on Friday afternoon after a ceremony was held in the temple premises.


Selvam, the priest, had locked the temple after the function was over.


Around noon on Saturday, the residents of the village noticed that the lock of the wooden gate was broken.


The Naachiaarkoil police were soon alerted about this.


When the police along with the temple authorities went inside, they found that the iron grill gate of the temple was also broken.


When they entered the temple, the officials found that a bronze idol of Arjunan, which is 72 cm tall and weighing around 15 kg, a bronze idol of Draupadi Amman that is 64 cm tall and weighs about 10 kg, and a 39 cm tall parrot idol, were stolen.


Based on the complaint filed by K Marimuthu , the administrator of Arulmigu Dharmaraja temple, the Naachiaarkoil police registered a case under Section 457 (ii), (breaking in in order to commit offence) and Section 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal code, and are on the lookout for the miscreants.
