According to police, Umsalma Beevi, a resident of Shankar Mill Street in Dharapuram, and her son Muhammed Ismayil, 47, had consumed poison on January 21.

The police said Ismayil became depressed after he stopped going to work due to health issues and took poison along with his elderly mother. As the doors of their house remained closed for long, the neighbours had gone into the house to check. They were shocked to see the duo lying unconscious.

The mother and son were immediately rushed to Dharapuram Government Hospital, where Beevi died, while Ismayil was shifted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). He too is undergoing treatment in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, in another incident, Palaniammal, 70, wife of Senniappan from Kamaraj Nagar near Avinashi in Tirupur committed suicide by jumping into Bhavani river on Friday.
