IPL: We let the match slip, admits Fleming

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming said that Kedar Jadhav was sent ahead of Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo in a tense run chase against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) because of his ability to play spin well.

However, Jadhav laboured to seven runs off 12 balls as KKR won the Indian Premier League (IPL) game by 10 runs here on Wednesday. “We thought that Kedar could play the spinner well and dominate, while Jadeja was there to come and finish. But in the end, there was too much work to do and we fell short,” said Fleming.

The New Zealander rued that Super Kings let the match “slip” despite having so many resources. The team added just 14 runs from overs 11 to 14, a period when it lost both Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu.

“If that partnership had continued for another four or five overs or if one of those players had got a 75+ score, the game might have been a lot different. Kolkata hung in there long enough to put pressure on us and we just couldn’t accelerate. We feel disappointed that we let it slip,” explained the 47-year-old.

Dinesh Karthik’s ploy to hold his ace spinner Sunil Narine for the back end of the innings paid dividends. “Ideally, you have one or two players that bat through. With KKR holding back Narine’s overs, it was difficult for us at the end,” said Fleming.
