Woman attempts suicide at CoP office

A 24-year-old woman from Anagaputhur tried to set herself ablaze in front of the Commissioner’s office on Tuesday. She was rescued by the policemen posted there.

The victim was identified as Mary Mercy from Anagaputhur. She is married to Sagaya Praveen (27), a lorry driver. Police sources said that Praveen’s family was demanding dowry soon the wedding and they attacked Mercy, which led to a miscarriage a few months ago. Mercy had filed a complaint with the Shankar Nagar police. As there was no action taken, she filed a complaint with the St Thomas Mount Deputy Commissioner and the Tambaram all-woman police station, too. Dejected of police inaction, she filed a complaint with the CoP last week. Sources said that the Shankar Nagar police inspector and Praveen’s family threatened her. Following that, Mercy went to the commissioner office and poured kerosene over her and tried self-immolation.
