Water tanker overturns in open ditch in Alandur, disrupts morning traffic

Around 5 am on Tuesday, a water tanker lorry was on its way to deliver water for the Metro Rail construction work in the locality.

CHENNAI: A water tanker overturned near Alandur in the early hours of Tuesday after its wheels got stuck in an improperly closed pit on the road. Traffic was affected in the area, however, no casualties were reported.

Around 5 am on Tuesday, a water tanker lorry was on its way to deliver water for the Metro Rail construction work in the locality. When the driver Prabu (30) turned the vehicle from the GST Road towards Adambakkam, the wheels of the lorry got stuck in one of the open pits. On impact, the tanker overturned and blocked the road.

On information, the St Thomas Mount police team rushed to the spot for recovery, and they managed to lift the tanker lorry after efforts lasting more than an hour with the help of a crane.

According to the police, the pit was dug by the electricity board to lay cables, but it was not closed properly.

The police requested the electricity board to immediately properly cover all the pits dug for cable works in the locality. Following the incident, the traffic was affected in the morning for nearly an hour.
