The incident on Anna Salai took place in front of the Teynampet police station in the afternoon when the driver of Kelambakkam-bound MTC bus (route No 221) from Chennai Central lost control over the wheel and rammed two autorickshaws.

Three women, Malathi (35) of Semmachery, Anjalai (31) of Foreshore Estate and Maheshwari (36) of Teynampet, sustained injuries in the accident. The passers-by rushed them to the Government Royapettah Hospital where Malathi was admitted for leg fracture. The other two women were discharged immediately after treatment, said the police.

After the incident, a few angry autorickshaw drivers picked up a quarrel with the MTC bus crew and attacked the driver, identified as Gurumurthy. He has also been admitted to a hospital. Tension prevailed on Anna Salai as fellow MTC drivers protested in support of Gurumurthy, leading to traffic snarl on the busy arterial road.

While the Teynampet police have picked up two autorickshaw drivers in connection with the assault on MTC driver, the Pondy Bazaar traffic investigation police have registered a case and are investigating.
