Erode was known as Periyar district till 1996. The district was the largest by area until Tiruppur district was carved out in 2009. Out of eight constituencies in the district, one Bhavanisagar is a reserved for SC. Among 106 total contestants in the 2011 Assembly election, 99 were males and 7 females. Erode district witnessed 1,287 votes for 49 (O) — maximum in Erode West constituency (235) and minimum in Bhavanisagar (74). All the constituencies in district were swept by AIADMK front in 2011.

Erode East constituency was formed in 2008 after the single Erode constituency was split into two — Erode East and Erode West. The winning party of the Erode constituency had been forming government since 1977 to 2006. Winning party: DMDK (2011).

Polling percentage: 79.30%
Winner: Ramalingam KV (AIADMK)
Runner-up: Yuvaraja M (INC)
Margin: 37,868 votes
Reorganised in 2008, Erode West constituency covers the western part of Erode corporation. The constituency will experience VVPAT facility in voting machines during the 2016 election. Winning party: AIADMK (2011).

VK Chinnasamy of AIAMDK was a four-time MLA from here. It was a general constituency earlier and became a reserved constituency for SC from 2011. Winning parties: CPI (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991, 1989 and 1984).
