CHENNAI: Angered by the sight and stench of overflowing sewage in the Pammal suburb of the Tambaram Corporation, residents staged a road blockade on Pammal-Pallavaram Road Friday morning. Pammal falls under Ward 7 of the corporation.

Due to clogged drains, the sewage water has seeped onto the roads and is lying stagnant, resembling small ponds, across Dayalan Street and other localities in Pammal. This is a health hazard for residents in these areas, especially children and the elderly, who have been forced to wade through overflowing sewage every day.

Fed up with zonal officials' inaction, the angry residents of Pammal took to the roads and protested against the Tambaram Corporation, demanding the clogged drains be cleared. Soon, Shankar Nagar police and the Pammal Zonal officers visited the spot and held peace talks with the protestors but they were not ready to withdraw.

As the traffic was affected heavily on the Pammal-Pallavaram Road, the police arrested around 50 people and took them to the nearby community hall. The police assured them that the officials would soon repair the drainage.

In response to the unrest, the Tambaram Corporation has announced that the Mayor and the Commissioner will meet the residents and visit the affected streets to review the situation and ensure that necessary action is taken, according to a Daily Thanthi report.
