Anish Rizwana (12) and Ajith Kumar (17) were suffering from Scoliosis, a spinal deformity. Speaking about the surgery Dean of Madurai GRH Vairamuthuraja said that Scoliosis was a condition characterised by improper development of lungs caused by insufficient growth of the back portion in a person. This would hamper walking style of the affected person and the legs would have to be removed if untreated. In the present two cases, both the patients were affected with more than 50 percentage of Scoliosis.

In case of Anish, hailing from Tiruvarur, she was operated and a metal plate was placed at the back of her body to support her. After some basic exercise, she would be able to walk freely, the Dean said. The surgery, which might cost around Rs 4 lakh in private hospitals, was done free of cost at the GRH. Another important factor in the surgeries was the usage of Neuro Monitor for the first time in a government hospital in the State.

Through the device, the nervous deformities could be monitored during the surgeries and major nervous issues could be avoided. The Dean was all praise for the team for successfully carrying out the tougher surgeries. Earlier in the hospital two such surgeries have been performed but without the Neuro Monitor.
