Police probe reason for woman’s fatal jump from building

Preliminary investigations into the incident have suggested it was a suicide. Police said that Anbukkarasi was distressed over the financial troubles in the family. Veerappan works at a tea stall in Ambattur.

CHENNAI: Police are probing the death of a woman who allegedly leapt off the terrace of her residence in Palavakkam. The deceased woman was identified as V Anbukkarasi (50). She lived with her husband, Veerappan (60) and her son, Balaguru, a college student.

Preliminary investigations into the incident have suggested it was a suicide. Police said that Anbukkarasi was distressed over the financial troubles in the family. Veerappan works at a tea stall in Ambattur.

Probe revealed that the family had pledged some of her jewels recently to pay for her son’s education and family expenses. On Friday night, she leapt off the terrace of her house.

Neighbours rushed to her aid and moved her to a hospital, where she succumbed on Saturday. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
