Driver Suresh, who first spotted the smoke emanating from through the bonnet around 10 am, stopped the car near the BSNL office on Poonamallee Highway to check what had happened.

However, since the smoke developed into a fire, all six passengers - Krishnamoorthy (66), his wife Vasuki (59), their son Sivasankar (36), his wife Anitha (26), their children Vaishnavi (9) and Sriram (4) exited the vehicle. While the driver fled the spot, the car was completely gutted before the fire personnel from Kumananchavadi arrived at the spot.

Police said that the car belonged to Thamizhmanian of Ranipet and family had hired the car to reach T Nagar for shopping. A defect in the car battery is the suspected to have caused the fire, though police are yet to establish it. Nazarathpet police have registered a case.
