The man was identified as P Jayavel of Vadapalani, who is married and has a son. The incident happened around 7 pm when he returned from a leather firm in Padi where he is employed.

Police said Jayavel parked his two-wheeler on the arm of the flyover going towards Villivakkam and jumped from a height of 40 feet. “He fell in front of the entrance of Wheels India,” said police.

Shocked passers-by rescued him and rushed him to KMC in an ambulance. On information, the Korattur police conducted inquiries. His brother Babu who reached Padi a few minutes later told police that he had received a call from Jayavel, informing him that he was unwell.

As he sustained severe head injuries and fractured left hand, police said that he would be transferred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for further treatment.

Babu told the police that Jayavel was upset after finding it difficult to run the family with his salary.
