CHENNAI: The Railway police found a male torso stuffed inside an abandoned suitcase near platform 4 of the Perambur railway station on Friday morning.

According to the police, passengers noticed a large suitcase left near the staircase leading towards the Perambur Jamalia area around 8 am and alerted Railway police personnel on duty. Officers initially suspected that a passenger may have forgotten the suitcase behind while boarding a train.

It was when they attempted to move the suitcase that they found it unusually heavy and decided to open it. They found a male torso inside, with the head and all four limbs missing; the legs were cut off at the knee, the police said. The body looked like that of a person 30-35 years of age, they noted.

Senior officers from the GRP and Chennai police visited the spot. The sniffer dog Jhansi picked up a trail towards the Perambur Carriage Works railway station platform. However, no suspects were identified.

The body was sent to the Kilpauk Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The Perambur Railway Police have registered a case and  questioned auto drivers, shopkeepers and vendors in and around the station. They are examining CCTV footage from in and around the station premises.

Investigators suspect the man was murdered elsewhere and the body was transported by train and abandoned here.
