Golden Retriever puppies, Shih Tzu killed in fire accident

The incident happened in the house of M Padmavathi (42) of Duraisamy Thottam 2nd street, West Saidapet. A widow, Padmavathi was living with her daughter for the past 12 years.

CHENNAI: Five puppies, all foreign breed pet dogs, died in a fire accident in a house in Saidapet on Tuesday night.

Police sources said that four golden retriever puppies and one Shih Tzu had died in the fire accident, police sources said.

The incident happened in the house of M Padmavathi (42) of Duraisamy Thottam 2nd street, West Saidapet. A widow, Padmavathi was living with her daughter for the past 12 years. Police investigations revealed that the women were dog lovers and also had the pet dogs for sale.

Around 11 pm on Wednesday, when they were sleeping in the house, they were woken up by the smoke in the room. Padmavathi immediately turned off the gas and electric switches and came out of the house.

Even as Padmavathi and her daughter were appealing for help, the smoke became thick and their whole portion got engulfed in smoke. Fire and rescue service personnel reached the scene and after managed to bring out the five puppies dead.

Police sources said that the five puppies had died in the fire accident and there was damage to property too. Saidapet Police are investigating.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that a short circuit led to the fire.
