CHENNAI: The bench comprising Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and D Bharatha Chakravarthy passed the direction on hearing a 2016-contempt petition filed by activist Traffic Ramasamy who is no more now. The petitioner wanted action against the officers who failed to comply with the court order to remove the street vendors from the main road.
“Though the GCC removes street vendors, they come again. To see compliance of the HC order, a permanent solution would be the relocation of hawkers to other places,” Chief Justice MN Bhandari observed.
J Ravindran, Additional Advocate General (AAG), had submitted the photographs and a report to show that the hawkers have been removed from the area. He also sought six weeks to submit with a permanent solution for the problem.
Advocate D Nagasaila, appearing for the street vendors informed the court that her clients are willing to relocate and noted that 15 places are pointed out to the state. The petition has been listed for June 9.
