In a representation to the Chief Secretary, the union’s general secretary SD Kamaraj said MTC buses on routes such as 17E and 12B were parked on the road due to the absence of a designated bus terminus in the area.

The union alleged that allowing buses to operate without an approved terminus violates provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, including Sections 66 and 72, which regulate permits and halting points. It also said the practice compromises public safety and infringes on the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.

According to the petition, roadside halts are increasing the risk of accidents, especially for two-wheeler riders, and endangering school students nearby. Traffic congestion in the area is also affecting the movement of emergency vehicles.

The union further highlighted the lack of basic amenities for drivers and conductors, including toilets, drinking water and rest areas. It pointed out that the absence of ramps and accessibility features violates the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

Raising concerns over women’s safety, the union said the area lacks adequate street lighting and CCTV surveillance, particularly at night.

The organisation has demanded that authorities set up a proper bus terminus in Saligramam, stop buses from halting on roadsides, and provide essential facilities for staff. It also called for improved lighting, CCTV coverage and traffic regulation measures to ensure the safety of commuters, especially students.
