CHENNAI: Swami Sivananda Salai, a crucial link road connecting Anna Salai and Kamarajar Salai (Marina Road) leading to the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, has been severely damaged due to the frequent movement of heavy metro water tanker lorries, causing hardship and safety concerns for thousands of motorists in Chennai.
Swami Sivananda Salai is one of the most important arterial roads in Chennai, connecting Marina Kamarajar Salai and Anna Salai. The presence of the MLA Hostel and offices of several central government institutions along this stretch results in thousands of vehicles using the road daily.
However, a section of this vital road has deteriorated badly and has become riddled with potholes due to the continuous movement of hundreds of heavy water tanker lorries supplying water from the Metro Water pumping station. The damage is particularly severe in a stretch of about 100 metres beyond the MLA Hostel.
Adding to the problem, water leaking from the tankers accumulates in the damaged portions of the road, turning the area slushy and waterlogged.
This has made it extremely difficult and risky for motorists to pass through, especially during peak hours.
Speaking to two-wheeler rider Kumaran said, “I travel through this road every day. Most parts of the road are in good condition, but the stretch just after the MLA Hostel is damaged due to the constant movement of tanker lorries. While riding through this area, there is a high risk of skidding and accidents, especially for two-wheelers.”
An auto driver, Pandian, said the road damage is directly linked to the tanker lorry operations from the Metro Water pumping station. “Because of the tanker lorries moving in and out, this portion of the road has been completely damaged. The Metro Water administration or the Greater Chennai Corporation should immediately repair this stretch before a major accident occurs,” he urged.
