Car catches fire near Perungalathur on GST road; four escape unharmed

The incident happened when Iyyapan (34) of Thanjavur was travelling to Chennai with three of his relatives.

CHENNAI: A car was gutted in a fire on the GST Road near Perungalathur in the wee hours of Thursday. Fortunately, none were injured in the fire, said officials.

The incident happened when Iyyapan (34) of Thanjavur was travelling to Chennai with three of his relatives. Around 5.30 am, while nearing Perungalathur on the Tiruchy-Chennai National Highway, he noticed smoke coming from the car. He immediately stopped the vehicle by the side of the road and immediately alerted the others on board. All of them quickly got out safely.

Minutes afterwards, the car caught fire. The traffic police personnel who noticed the incident alerted the Tambaram fire and rescue team. The police officials stopped a water tanker passing on the highway in the meantime, and used it to douse the fire. Despite their efforts, the vehicle was severely damaged in the fire.

The Peerkankaranai police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
