The proposed system was discussed at the university’s academic council meeting on Thursday where it was decided that the system would initially be implemented in the university’s four institutions — the College of Engineering, Guindy, the Alagappa College of Technology, Guindy, the Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet, and the School of Architecture & Planning, Guindy.
The relative grading system considers the performance of all students in a class to assign grades from the top scorer to the lowest as against the present system where grades are fixed according to marks.
Anna University vice chancellor Prof. M. Rajaram said the university wished to implement the system soon as it would be beneficial to students and make examination a stress free experience. The academic council also discussed the need to revise syllabi for private engineering colleges in the state.
A member said representatives of private engineering colleges urged the university authorities to revise the syllabi and ensure parity with top institutes.
