The deceased was identified as Subramani from Keelvasalai village near Maduranthagam. The arrested nephew was identified as Kumaraguru (25) of the same locality. Police said Subramani and his brother Deepanjiyan (60) were doing farming in a three-acre land they inherited from their father which they irrigate with a common motor pump.

Recently Subramani purchased a half-acre land adjacent to his property after which Deepanjiyan asked Subramani not to use the joint irrigation facility for the new land. On Wednesday evening when Deepanjiyan and his wife went to water the farm, they found Subramani using the common pump to irrigate his new land, which led to an argument.

In the night, Deepanjiyan informed his son Kumaraguru about it and on Thursday morning Kumaraguru, who went to the farm, quarrelled with Subramani and during a heated conversation smashed Subramani’s head with a big stone, police said. After confirming Subramani’s death, he dumped the body in his neighbour Mohan’s farm well. Mohan, who noticed the incident, informed Sithamur police, who retrieved the body and arrested Kumaraguru. Further investigations are on.
