16-year-old kills boy over new phone demand

The Muthupettai police on Thursday detained a 16-yearold boy for murdering a 13-year-old allegedly for damaging a mobile phone.

A Majith Mohammed (13) of Naachikulam village, cultivated friendship with a 16-year-old SSLC drop out boy from the same village.

It is said the 16-year old accidentally dropped the mobile phone owned by Majith Mohammed six months ago and the display screen of the phone was damaged. Though the boy assured to replace the damaged display, he did not fulfil the promise. Meanwhile, on Wednesday evening, Majith met the 16-year-old near the railway track in the village and demanded replacement of the screen.

During the altercation that followed, the 16-year-old boy reportedly strangulated Majith and left the place.

Based on a complaint filed by Majith’s family, police detained the accused in a bus, on his way to Nagore. Later, he was produced before the Child Welfare committee and was lodged in the Government Observation home at Thanjavur.
