According to beliefs, curses caused by lizard can cause negative impacts in one's life. Two gold-silver plated lizards are seen in the ceiling of the temple. On touching these lizards from head to tail, it is believed that the doshas caused by lizards will be removed.

Once a devotee of Varadaraja Perumal visited the temple along with his wife. The temple was about to close during his visit. The devotees crossed the temple entrance in hurry, uttering the word ''Varada''. Two lizards on either side of the devotee's legs died while crossing his path.

Lord Perumal appeared and showered his grace upon the lizards and said, "You will reach Moksha since you died while boring my devotees' legs. You will be with me forever as silver and gold lizards. Those who touch you, while uttering my name will receive the benefit of a complete removal from all lizard doshas."
