“Individuals should maintain a distance of six feet as far as feasible. Gym equipment such as cardio and strength machines should also be placed six feet apart,” said Chief Secretary K Shanmugam in the Government Order (GO) that detailed the SOP.

The government has advised gyms owners to utilise outdoor space as much as possible and to create separate entry and exit points. Air-conditioners are allowed but the temperature should be in the range of 24 degree Celsius to 30 degree Celsius.

Wearing face masks is made compulsory while entering the gyms. However, during the workout, masks can be replaced with visors.

The patrons should be allowed entry only after screening them through thermal scanners. Only asymptomatic persons are allowed inside the gyms. At the entry and exit points of the gyms, hand sanitisers should be kept compulsorily. Also, hand sanitisers should be provided near all gym equipment and patrons should use it before commencing their exercise, the SOP added.

Following demands from the Tamil Nadu Gym Owners’ Welfare Association, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had announced on Wednesday that gyms would be permitted to function from August 10. The Chief Minister had added that the SOP for operating gyms would be released separately. It was released by the government on Thursday, listing in detail the steps to be taken while operating gyms.
