REPORTERS DIARY: Officials happy with new rules for school holidays

The recent announcement by the State government on standardising guidelines for declaring holidays on account of rain has not only ensured uniformity in declaration of leave for schools across the State but has also come as a huge relief for the officials.

A senior Revenue official said that whenever his district witnessed rainfall, he was annoyed at the number of calls his staff received from parents and school authorities to know if the schools were functioning the next day. “The calls start in the night and continue all the way into the morning. We lose sleep over it,” the official said. With the government’s announcement, district collectors can now breathe easy as they can declare a holiday even hours before the school begins.

It is a big relief for parents, too. Now, the moment its starts raining in the night, it would be a familiar scene in every house where the students would be glued to the television to know whether the schools would function the next day. Parents, especially office goers, too sit with the children to scan the news channels till late in night, as they need to make alternative arrangements if holiday is declared for their children. The only section that is upset over this are the students. They now have to wake up early and get ready before they can find out if the school functions or not.
