CHENNAI: Students of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) on Wednesday withdrew their two-day protest after the Animal Husbandry Department gave assurance of a stipend hike within a month.
A TANUVAS student said, “As a result of our protest, we had a meeting with the additional secretary of the department on Wednesday, who promised the hike in a month. We have been told that if our demands are not fulfilled then the University will support the student's decision in future.”
Following the assurance and upon the discussion with the University Dean, HoDs and professors, nearly 200 students withdrew protest at 6:30 pm on Wednesday.
The reason for students protesting was demanding a stipend hike of Rs 25,000 from currently Rs 10,500 and an annual 3 per cent increment in internship allowance on par with medical students.
“Pandemic and epidemiological incidents in humans point out the need for veterinarians in society. Hence a stipend and allowance hike will enable us to perform our job better,” said a final-year student
