CHENNAI: Robotic labs at a cost of Rs 6.09 crore were installed in 15 State government schools – one each in 15 districts – to develop problem-solving skills among students from classes 6-9, and also enable their ability to work collaboratively in teams.

The districts include Kancheepuram, Kanniyakumari, Pudukkottai, Salem, Thoothukudi, Tirupattur, Tiruvarur, Dharmapuri, Tiruchy, Kallakurichi, Chennai, Coimbatore, Sivaganga, Vellore and Virudhunagar.

An official release from the School Education Department stated that the related curriculum for the labs was prepared by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) with the support of Anna University. Accordingly, 10 modules were developed for each class using 11 types of equipment, with 90% emphasis on activity-based learning.

A senior official from the department said, “For students in Classes 6-9 in the 15 government schools, the curriculum has been designed across themes such as multi-functional robotics, STEM workstation powered by prototyping virtual labs, colour sorter programmable robotics, smart dustbin programmable robotics, hungry robot programmable robotics, life size voice controlled robot, drone operation and basic electronics, to enhance students’ learning skills.”

Students can strengthen their basic understanding of electronics and physics by handling simple electrical circuits, breadboard usage and sensors. “These robotic labs are not merely technology training centres but they are an educational programme capable of transforming students’ thinking in a structured manner. This initiative will prepare students in government schools to confidently face the challenges of the future and shape them into skilled innovators,” he added.
