CHENNAI: A cultural twinning agreement between Madurai and Camberley in the UK will be signed in Madurai during the Pongal festival as a gesture of gratitude to Colonel John Pennycuick, said Surrey Heath mayor Louise Ashbery at the Chennai airport on Friday.

The Mullaperiyar dam, which is a key source of water for south Tamil Nadu, was constructed by British engineer Colonel John Pennycuick, a native of Camberley, amid severe challenges. In recognition of his contribution, a memorial has been built at Gudalur in Theni district, and a statue has been installed in Camberley by the Tamil Nadu government.

As part of a cultural linkage initiative, the State government has decided to bring together Madurai and Camberley through a formal agreement.

Ashbery, who arrived in Chennai on a five-day visit to witness the event, was received at the airport by Sandan Beer Oli, secretary of the Camberley Tamilar British Association.

Speaking to reporters, Ashbery said linking Camberley and Madurai would renew their historical connection and also lay the foundation for future development. “The partnership will promote cultural exchange, business investment and education. We will meet Chief Minister MK Stalin to discuss the agreement. This initiative is our debt of gratitude to Pennycuick,” she said.
