Auto Chandran of Visaranai fame helps pregnant woman deliver on Kovai road

There was no sign of the ambulance as the 26-year-old migrant worker from north India lay there on the roadside writhing in labour pain, and her husband was desperately trying to get a vehicle to rush her to the hospital for delivery. That was when help came in the form of an autorickshaw driver.

The ‘hero’ in this story from Coimbatore was the author of over half a dozen books, including the bestselling novel Lockup that was made into the award-winning film, Visaranai – M Chandrakumar, popularly known as ‘Auto’ Chandran.

Chandran was returning after dropping a passenger on Saturday when he noticed the family in deep despair. When asked, he was told that they were waiting for the ambulance to take the woman, wife of a coolie living on the roadside along the railway gate on Kamarajar Salai in Singanallur, to the hospital for delivery.

The ambulance crew reportedly assured to reach the spot in half an hour, but there was no sign of it, and the woman was screaming as the pain intensified. Sensing that she was close to delivering the baby, her family laid her on the roadside.

Rushing to her help, Chandran asked the family members to cover the place and assisted the woman as she delivered a healthy boy. By then, the ambulance reached the spot and took both the mother and the baby to the Coimbatore GH. Both the mother and the baby are stable, sources confirmed.
