CHENNAI: Two inmate factions linked to the high-profile 2024 murder of then Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) State president Armstrong clashed at Puzhal Central prison on Friday.
Armstrong was hacked to death near his Perambur residence on July 5, 2024. Over 25 individuals, including longtime rowdy Nagaendran (who recently died in prison due to illness), his son Aswathaman, and another aide, the late Arcot Suresh’s brother Poonai Balu, were arrested.
While Aswathaman and 11 others were released on bail last month, Poonai Balu, his brother-in-law Manivannan, and alleged bomb supplier Puthur Appu remain in the high-security wing. The violence erupted during a heated argument over securing bail for other accused in the Armstrong case.
Poonai Balu’s group and a faction led by Puthur Appu reportedly engaged in a fight using hands and wooden rollers. Prison officer assistant jailor Thirunavukkarasu and guards attempted to intervene, during which Thirunavukkarasu was also assaulted.
Prison Superintendent Krishnaraj has filed a complaint at the Puzhal police station. Preliminary investigations suggest the dispute originated from unpaid money for supplied explosives and alleged non-cooperation from Suresh’s faction in securing bail. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
