CHENNAI: The 46th convocation of Anna University will be held on February 4. More than 1.5 lakh students, including research scholars, are set to receive their degree certificates. The function will also be held without a Vice-Chancellor, as the post is yet to be filled at the university.

The convocation has assumed significance as Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan is expected to boycott the event, citing that the feud between the State government and Raj Bhavan is still unresolved.

The previous convocation of the varsity, held in October 2024, was also boycotted by the Minister. At that event, Anil Sahasrabudhe, chairman, Executive Committee of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, participated as the chief guest and delivered the convocation address.

Sources in Anna University said that Governor RN Ravi will participate in the convocation. Details of the chief guest will be announced once finalised.

According to sources, 30 meritorious students will be honoured during the convocation, with first-rank holders drawn from various courses offered by the university departments.

Nine students from the Alagappa College of Technology campus will receive medals, while one student from the School of Architecture and Planning campus will be honoured. In addition, seven other candidates will also be awarded medals.

The university has informed that research scholars who successfully defended their PhD on or before June 30, 2025, must register on the university’s Centre for Research portal to receive their degrees in person on February 4. The list of research scholars opting to receive degrees in person will be updated daily on the website.
