'10% reservation announced for govt school students in MBBS admission'

CHENNAI: In a significant move, the Puducherry government has implemented 10 per cent reservation in medical admission for government school students.

Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Tamilisai Soundararajan on Tuesday announced that the Union Territory government would soon implement the 10 per cent reservation in medical admission (MBBS, BDS) for government school students.

"I have recommended the Puducherry chief minister N Rangasamy to consider providing 10 per cent reservation in medical admissions to the students who studied in government schools. Now he (N Rangasamy) is taking steps to implement the 10 per cent reservation from the current academic year (2023-2024), " Tamilisai Soundararajan said in a release.

Earlier on the day, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) staged a demonstration near the Assembly in Puducherry demanding implementation of 7.5 per cent reservation for government school students in medical admission in the Union Territory.

Notably, the other political parties including Congress also urged the UT government to implement 7.5 per cent reservation.
