Pep Guardiola’s side had gotten the better of Chelsea in last year’s summit clash. As the scores were locked at one goal each after regulation time, the result had to be decided by spot-kicks this time around. Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum was the only player to miss a penalty as all five Man City (Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus) takers converted.

Winger Raheem Sterling struck the opener for the victor in the 12th minute with a close range finish. City led 1-0 during the breather, but Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip deservedly equalised for the Champions League 2018-19 title-winner 13 minutes from time. Kyle Walker made a goal-line clearance after Mohamed Salah dinked the ball over City keeper Claudio Bravo. That was important for City to take the match into penalties.

Sancho does it for Dortmund

English winger Jadon Sancho starred for Borussia Dortmund as his side beat rival Bayern Munich 2-0 to clinch its sixth DFL Super Cup. The teenager was the key man, scoring one goal and assisting the other in front of the Dortmund faithful. The Bayern side looked a little lost without departed greats Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben. Lucien Favre’s side tailed off in last season’s title challenge, finishing runner-up to Bayern, which bagged a record 29th league trophy and the DFB Pokal. However, the home side showed its determination right from the start.

Paco Alcacer opened the scoring three minutes after half-time. Sancho dazzled the opposition with his footwork on the right before teeing up the Spanish striker on the edge of the box, who found the bottom right corner. The Englishman then collected the ball and sprinted from almost the halfway line to double Dortmund’s lead.
