The talk in political circles here is that she may be the party’s prospective Mayor candidate. Sarubala this time has been allotted ward no 44 from where she was elected as a member in 2001 and was elected Mayor for the first time, when she was with the then TMC.
According the political analysts, Sarubala’s tenure witnessed vast development in the city. She was keen on implementing e-governance in the Corporation. After completing her tenure 2001-06, she contested as a Congress candidate after the TMC was merged with the parent party and won from ward no 44 in 2006. Sarubala was again elected as Mayor despite the ally DMK held maximum number of seats. With this she got the credit of maximum serving Mayor in the State.
Later, she quit the Mayor post and contested in the Lok Sabha polls in 2009. But Sarubala lost to AIADMK candidate P Kumar, who became the MP for the first time. Similarly, she contested in the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 and again lost to Kumar.
Meanwhile, when GK Vasan floated the TMC (Moopanar), she too was part of it and became the party’s Tiruchy urban district president. With this, she became the first woman district president in TMC.
Now with the possibility of Sarubala being elected as the Mayor, the AIADMK cadre are jubilant as she is a known face among the people and would lead the civic body with more command.
With the possibility of Congress fielding the present council member R Hema to the ward, Sarubala had to work more as Hema had already earned good name among the residents of the ward.
In the meantime, the present Mayor A Jaya has been fielded in ward 51. With this, both Sarubala and Jaya have to prove their popularity in their respective wards and it appears to be a do or die election for both of them.
