CHENNAI: State minister for Water Resources Duraimurugan on Sunday said that there will be no flooding in Chennai this year.
Duraimurugan along with MSME Minister TM Anbarasan inspected the Porur lake and flood mitigation works undertaken by the Water Resources department.
"In most areas more than 95 percent (flood mitigation) work has been completed and it will take a week's time to complete. Only in a few areas it will take around 15 days to complete. However, there will be no flooding this year unlike the previous years and the water received will be drained into the sea." said Duraimurugan, while addressing the media, during the inspection.
Apart from Greater Chennai Corporation, the Water Resources department is also entrusted with the task of flood mitigation in southern and southwestern suburbs of Chennai. Rs 20 crore was allotted for undertaking flood mitigation works, which started on September 22.
When asked about the pending works, Duraimurugan said that AIADMK did not undertake any desilting works in Chennai in their 10 years rule which burdened the DMK with additional works.
"AIADMK led by former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on two occasions allotted more than Rs 300 crore for desilting but after taking charge and verifying the documents it was found no such works were undertaken. All the announcements remained only in papers and did not reflect in the ground." said Duraimurugan.
