MK: Stop AP check dams across Palar by all means

Questioning the ruling AIADMK’s handling of the Palar issue, DMK president M Karunanidhi on Tuesday urged chief minister J Jayalalithaa to do more to protect the riparian rights of the state.

Referring to a few media reports and his earlier statement about the issue of Andhra constructing a check dam across the river and taking control of Kanaganachiamman temple on the river bank, Karunanidhi said he’s pained to wonder why the state, which does not show as much interest as the media on the issue, would at least not take cue from media and act accordingly.

“It is time the Chief Minister consulted the PWD and HR&CE officials and took efforts to find an amicable settlement either by approaching the court or by holding dialogue with Andhra Pradesh,” Karunanidhi said, also urging Jayalalithaa to write to the Centre apprising them of the issue in detail.

“Instead, if the Chief Minister continues to be slack on the issue, only the rights of the state people would be infringed,” Reports emerged recently about Andhra constructing a check dam across Palar river and subsequently raising its height in violation of the water sharing agreement reached between Madras Presidency and Mysore in 1892 and a 2006 order of the Supreme Court imposing a ban on raising any structure across the river without the consent of the stakeholder riparian state of Tamil Nadu. MDMK leader too has urged the state government to act on war footing to prevent Andhra from constructing a check dam.

Stalin visits Kolathur, receives petitions

M K Stalin, DMK treasurer and leader of the opposition party in the Assembly, toured his Kolathur constituency on Tuesday, to receive representations from the public and hear their grievances in person. Later, he held discussions with government officials and directed them to redress the people’s problems expeditiously. He said that a long pending problem in GKM Colony was that the pond behind Muthumariamman temple had not been cleaned and maintained properly. He wanted the hyacinth to be cleared immediately.
