Chennai
The disastrous flash floods that Chennai witnessed in the first week of November-December last year causing an estimated economic losses of USD 2.2 billion has been identified as the largest natural catastrophe in India in 2015, according to a study.
The study by Swiss Re Group said that the extreme rainfall volume over a short duration paralysed Chennai with major disruption to critical infrastructure. “The event highlights the vulnerability of rapidly growing urban areas to flash floods originating from heavy rains,” the report said.
Chennai was paralysed November and December in 2015 after accumulated rainfall of more than 500 mm with some areas receiving more than 250 mm rainfall in just 24 hours. Of the total losses, insured losses were USD 0.8 billion, making the floods the second costliest insurance event in India on sigma records.
The report also pointed out that a large part of the losses originated from commercial lines as Chennai is home to several manufacturing companies, particularly in the motor industry.
Swiss Re Economic Research & Consulting ranked Chennai floods as 14th among the 20 costliest insurance losses in the world in 2015. The flash floods were also ranked 14th among the 20 worst catastrophes in terms of victims with 289 killed in the catastrophe.
The catastrophe which flooded 55,175 hectares also resulted in injuries to over 1,000. “Based on sigma criteria, there were 25 catastrophic events in India last year, up from 20 in 2014,” the report read and added that the total economic losses almost six times that of insured losses.
“India’s total economic losses from all disasters, including natural and man-made exceeded USD 6.2 billion in 2015, down from USD 13.4 billion in 2014 whereas the total insured losses were USD 1 billion in 2015, up from USD 971 million the year before. In India, uninsured losses from all catastrophes and man-made disasters were 84 per cent of the total losses in 2015, down from 93 per cent in 2014.
