“The story is about four crazy chefs who have been set the impossible task of making a wedding banquet in just one hour. The performance begins with three chefs starting their regular workday when the manager bursts into the kitchen with his troublemaker nephew and asks them to prepare a feast for a wedding in an hour’s time. Well, this also includes a Korean traditional wedding cake Injeolmi that is made with bean flour. To make all this happen, the three chefs should also teach the manager’s nephew how to cook. The show is about whether the chefs will complete the preparations on time and the nephew will learn a thing or two about cooking,” says Junghwan Hyun, who plays the nephew’s character.Though he is the troublemaker of the kitchen, where he creates one mess after another, Junghwan’s skills come out at the end of the show. “I play an integral part while preparing the wedding cake and I would say it would be the best part of Cookin Nanta,” he shares.Another performer Junseok Na shows off his amazing physical abilities with martial arts as well as knife handling and meat cutting skills. “But everything is to impress the one and only independent sous chef played by Hyejin Yun. Though she is energetic and smart, she is almost out of control at times. Most importantly, I have to manage Junghwan Hyun’s nonsense,” Junseok Na bursts into laughter. The musical has been performed across the globe for last two decades and the team has developed their expertise. “We have been through trials and errors and have performed under various conditions. Based on these experiences we prepare our performance. As knives and fire are used for performances, we always put first the safety of Nanta team (actors and staffs) as well as the audience. It is our biggest concern — so we always double-check and rehearse to minimise the risk of danger,” says Junghwan Hyun. The musical organised by Consulate General of the Republic of Korea, Korea Foundation and InKo Centre will be staged this Friday at Sir MuthaVenkatasubba Rao Concert hall.
