Tech Next: Find out what’s smart about the season’s hot new phones
OnePlus has mastered the art of the limited edition. Hot on the heels of the OnePlus 6T, the brand has unveiled a Thunder Purple variant.
Chennai
Deep Purple
It embraces any form of light – the light play adds a brilliant element to the gradient pattern that transitions from a smoky black to a deep purple. It’s all glass but the matte finish ensures this device is easy to grip and doesn’t have an affinity for fingerprints.
The 6T is OnePlus’ second flagship for 2018 and is a follow up to the OnePlus 6. The 6T makes a couple of significant changes; there’s a teardrop notch that further expands the display with an impressive 85.6% screen: body ratio. The 6.41-inch display (1080 x 2340 pixels / 19.5:9 aspect ratio) is vibrant even under harsh sunlight. The fingerprint sensor now sits under the bottom half of the display. It’s what OnePlus calls Screen Unlock, it’s one of the coolest smartphone innovations we’ve seen this year.
2018 has seen OnePlus take on pricey Android flagships on their Rs 40,000 plus turf. A stellar camera is therefore a must have. The 6T retains the same 16MP Selfie cam and dual rear cam (16MP + 20MP) but makes one key enhancement – Nightscape. This clever software enhancement elevates low-light images with a simple trick. The 6T snaps up to 10 multi-frame shots with high dynamic range and then puts them together to create the perfect image.
Ultimately OnePlus is about speed and a seamless user experience. At its heart is a zippy Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Processor with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and two internal storage variants – 128GB / 256GB. Battery life is solid thanks to an improved 4000 mAh battery. The device ships with the latest version of Android (9.0) and OnePlus’ pleasing Oxygen UI. The Thunder Purple edition is the most distinctive colour we’ve seen roll out of a OnePlus assembly line. The 6T delivers a well-rounded Android experience but you can give it a miss if you already own the OnePlus 6. (Cost Rs 41,999 – 8GB / 128GB)
Pixel Stand
Google’s Pixel Stand made heads turn during the launch of the Pixel 3 and 3XL. It’s a wireless charger that does more than just charge your phone. It offers fast charging (at 10W) and can charge smartphones (like the iPhone XS and Samsung Galaxy S9) that are compatible with the industry standard Qi technology. The Pixel Stand sticks to the same elegant, minimalist design language that we love about Google’s Pixel smartphones - your smartphone rests on an obelisk.
It’s one of the fastest wireless chargers – it took just two hours to power the Google Pixel 3XL and offers a couple of handy features for Pixel 3 (and 3XL) users. The Pixel stand doubles up as a photo frame - you can pick a photo album from your Google Photos stream. Then there’s Google Assistant Mode that automatically prompts you with small bubbles on the screen and can update you on the News and weather. (Cost: Rs 6,900)
