COIMBATORE: The Ooty Town Central Police on Sunday arrested two people for robbing Rs 30 lakh after attacking a father and son.

Police said Thangaraj, 55 and his son Yuvaraj, 25; both hailing from Manapparai in Tiruchi had come to Ooty by bus in the early morning to pay Rs 30 lakh for vegetables bought from farmers in the hills.

“They collected the amount from other traders in Tiruchi, who buy vegetables from farmers in the Nilgiris, and used to come to Ooty every Sunday to settle the payments. At around 5.30 am, Thangaraj and Yuvaraj were bound to market after alighting from a bus, when a three-member gang arrived in a car and unleashed an attack on the duo with sickle and weapons,” police said.

The trio then snatched away the bag containing cash and escaped in their car from the spot. On information, the Ooty Town Central police arrived and admitted the father and son duo in Ooty Government Hospital.

Special teams of police scanned the images recorded in CCTV’s and intensified checks in check posts. Police stopped a car on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam Road and during inquiries; it was found out that the duo Chandrabose, 33 from Tiruchi and an 18-year-old youth from Kangeyam in Tirupur were involved in the robbery.

Police seized Rs 30 lakh from them and a search is under way to nab another accused, who is on the run.
