Admissions to placements, e-governance boon for colleges

CHENNAI: In a bid for speedy and effective administration, especially during admission time, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to implement total e-governance in the Directorate of Collegiate education. The e-governance will also ensure the best services to all students and faculty through integrated and user-friendly software, mainly for transparency, efficiency, and reliability to attain global standards in higher education.

Areas covered under the e-governance project will be interaction among faculty and departments, integration of finance and account, student enrolment and admission, examination and certification, research and development, student placements, and enhancement of the teaching skills of faculty.

A senior official from the Higher Education Department told DT Next that the State government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 99.80 lakh for Phase-1 of the project and Rs 1.32 crore for the Phase-2 programme.

“Accordingly, Tamil Nadu e-governance agency is developing the required software for office administration and integration of the directorate with the joint directorates and colleges across the State,” he added.

The official said all the government Arts and Science Colleges under the directorate will be networked with optic fibre connectivity to enhance the IT infrastructure of the institutions.

Stating that under the e-governance programme, a centralised communication system will be installed, he said video conferences and other online facilities, including in the college admission process, will be enhanced from the current system.

“In addition, the e-governance initiative will also create centralised academic information and learning management system for all the colleges,” he said adding “the learning management includes centralised attendance management system, student’s assignments, online courses and conducting proper online exams”.

Pointing out that the existing services in the web portal of the Directorate of Collegiate Education will be further improved, the official said an online scholarship management system will also be developed so that all the transactions for the beneficiaries will be transparent.

“Under the e-governance projects, the identity cards will also be disbursed immediately once the students or faculty apply it online,” he said adding even student placement will be enhanced through the project.
