“Due to the depression formed in southern region of Bay of Bengal, the wind that is expected to blow at a maximum of 65 km per hour on Monday will intensify on Tuesday to a maximum of 75 km per hour. The wind will further increase its speed up to 100 km an hour on Wednesday and so fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea till Wednesday,” said TNSDMA, in a tweet.

The agency said high tides might reach a height of up to 18 ft at seashores in northern Tamil Nadu and 9.8 ft in southern TN.

TNSDMA has warned people living in coastal areas to remain alert as the entire stretch will receive heavy rainfall and they have been asked to ensure that all their documents are kept safe. “ID cards, Aadhaar cards and voter ID cards should be placed safely away. People should repair their doors, windows and should remove the dried trees and ad plates lying near their houses,” a TNSDMA official said.

Officials said that the fishermen need to be apprised of this unfamiliar weather situation through presidents of coastal hamlets, worship sites and also through notice boards at the Department of Fisheries and fishing harbours. Moreover, the fishermen too need to be aware of the changing weather through fish landing centres and seafood auction halls.
