Dalit family forced to vacate house in Tirupur
In an incident of caste discrimination, a Dalit family was forced to vacate their own house and move out of a colony dominated by caste Hindus in Tirupur district.
Coimbatore
The victim M Kumar, a native of Urumandampalayam in Coimbatore had been residing with his wife and elderly mother at Guruvayurappan Nagar near Kunnathur in a piece of land bought by him 7 years ago. Over the years, more than 100 houses have come up in the locality and a majority of them were from dominant communities.
“For a long time, the caste Hindu residents were threatening me to move out of the locality, but I stoutly refused and stood my ground, despite facing lot of discrimination. They took the issue to an AIADMK functionary, also a caste Hindu, who along with his group of supporters threatened and attacked me and my elderly mother Pappal, 65 on November 8,” Kumar claimed.
He further alleged that the AIADMK functionary took him to the Kunnathur police station threatening to foist a false case of sexual abuse.
On the same day, the assaulters had forced him to move to his brother’s house by forcefully loading his household items and cattle in a hired goods vehicle.
Kumar said that despite submitting a petition and an online complaint on November 13 with Kunnathur police station, the police have failed to act. Dalit outfits in the district have now threatened to protest, if inaction persists.
However, the police at Kunnathur station claimed that they were unaware of any such complaint and assured to look into it.
