Rajiv Gandhi case: LoP writes to Purohit on convicts’ release, Min expects good decision
DMK president MK Stalin has written to Governor Banwarilal Purohit, asking him to accept the recommendations of the state Cabinet and remit the life sentences of Perarivalan among the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case.

Reiterating their demand for early release of the seven convicts, who are “undergoing the agony of imprisonment for about three decades,” Stalin, in his letter to the Governor, said, “The fact that the recommendation of the state Cabinet has been kept pending for over two years by your office reflects poorly on the state and gives the impression that the government is not run in accordance with law.”
Quoting the order of SC in a special leave petition filed by AG Perarivalan in the matter, including the case hearing on November 3, 2020, which was widely reported in the media, Stalin requested the Governor to “kindly accept the recommendation of the state Cabinet dated September 9, 2018 and remit the life sentence of all seven convicts and direct their release immediately and oblige.”
Waiting with confidence
Meanwhile, state Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management RB Udhayakumar on Thursday said that the state is waiting with confidence for the release of Rajiv convicts. “We (state government) are waiting confidently for the release of all seven Rajiv convicts. We will rejoice the release of Rajiv convicts and so Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami successfully passed the resolution and sent it for Governor Banwarilal Purohit,” he said addressing reporters in Madurai.
