Active cases in a few TN districts see downward trend

Tamil Nadu on Monday reported 5,967 fresh COVID infections as the tally slowly inched towards four lakh cases while the death toll touched 6,614 with 97 fatalities. Of the tally recorded at 3,85,352, 5,941 were native cases while the rest were returnees from other states/countries.

While Chennai recorded 1,278 cases, several other districts continued to report a steady number without any let down. Coimbatore had 387 cases while Chengalpettu and Cuddalore saw 306 and 370 cases respectively. Other districts too had a high number of cases including Kancheepuram with 226 cases and Salem with 273 cases.

Currently, Dindigul has the least number of active cases at 172 in the State, while Chennai has the highest at 13,255 cases. Virudhunagar which reported a high number of cases for quite sometime has now controlled the spread and presently has 437 cases. Madurai too has less than 1,000 active cases as of now. The total number of active cases in the State stands at 53,282. “In some districts, a downward trend is been witnessed. It is a positive sign as a result of all the safety measures undertaken. The trend will continue in other districts too,” said Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine Dr TS Selvavinayagam.

Of the 97 deaths recorded, five cases did not have co-morbidities. Chennai had 23 deaths, while Kancheepuram had eight deaths, Coimbatore seven and Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli had five deaths each. A total of 6,129 people were discharged, bringing the total number of recoveries in the State so far to 3,23,456. The recovery rate in Tamil Nadu stands at 84%.

Nearly 70,023 samples were taken across 140 private and public testing facilities across the state, bringing the total number of samples taken so far to 42,76,640.
