DMK seeks White Paper on investments, jobs

DMK president MK Stalin has asked Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to release a White Paper on the volume of investment received and jobs generated through the Global Investors Meet (GIM), his foreign tours and MoUs signed during the lockdown. He also asked the CM to immediately scrap the e-pass system like Puducherry did and pay Rs 5,000 per family in the State.

Expressing shock at the unemployment rate in the State reportedly rising to 49.8 per cent, which is double the national average of 23.5 per cent, Stalin claimed on Sunday that it has risen by tenfold since December 2019.

Citing a joint study by the Statistics Department and Madras Institute of Development Studies that concluded that on an average one person per family has lost job in 53 per cent of households in TN between March and May, the DMK president said the numbers revealed the extent of livelihood loss suffered by the people.

Stalin attributed job and income loss to unscientific extension of lockdown in the State, and added that the “stone-hearted” AIADMK regime was whiling away time making false claims about wooing fresh investment and signing MoUs, without paying heed to the Opposition’s demand to directly pay Rs 5,000 per family to assist the people.

Charging the AIADMK regime of betraying a generation of youth by pushing the State economy into deep doldrums, the Leader of Opposition asked the CM to lend ears to at least his own government’s report and release a White Paper on the investment and jobs generated through GIM, MoUs and foreign tours of the CM.

    Minister denies allegations

Meanwhile, reacting to Stalin’s statement Minister Kadambur C Raju dismissed the allegations on unemployment rate.

Citing a report from Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy Pvt Ltd, Raju said though unemployment rate in TN was 49.8 per cent in April, consistent efforts by the State has brought it down to 8.1 per cent in July.

AIADMK IT Wing leader Raj Satyen said in a tweet that information on unemployment was available in public. “By giving out false statements, is Stalin displaying his ignorance or is he thinking that he can win by cheating public,” he questioned.
