COVID fatalities come below three-figure as TN reports 80 deaths
Tamil Nadu recorded 5,980 cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, of which 23 were imported from several other States and countries. However, the day’s toll reduced significantly as only 80 deaths were reported across the State.

The fatalities fell by about 40 in just two days. More than 100 fatalities were being recorded daily since August 3.Of the 5,980 cases reported on Saturday, 1,294 were in Chennai. Of the state’s tally of 3,73,410 cases, the city’s share was 1,24,071, the bulletin said. Among other districts, Chengalpattu reported 406 cases, 389 cases were reported in Coimbatore, Tiruvallur recorded 384 cases and Cuddalore recorded 309 cases of COVID-19. Kancheepuram, Salem and Vellore also reported more than 200 coronavirus cases on Saturday.
Of the fatalities recorded on Saturday, 23 were reported from private hospitals and 57 from government hospitals in Tamil Nadu and 72 people had underlying co-morbid conditions, while eight of them did not have any health problems. The death toll in the State has reached 6,420. A one-year-old baby from Tirupathur district who was COVID-19 positive with “aspiration pneumonitis’ was admitted to the district government hospital and died on August 22. The deceased also included a 90-year-old man.
Active cases stood at 53,710 with 5,603 discharges from various health care facilities and in total 3,13,280 have recovered, a Health Department bulletin said. According to the bulletin, 73,547 samples were tested on Saturday, taking the tally to 41,36,490.
