Submit case diary of firing by DMK MLA, orders HC

Taking a serious view of the government submission that Tiruporur MLA L Idhayavarman of the DMK was operating a gun manufacturing unit in his farmhouse, the Madras High Court directed the police to submit the case diary pertaining to the arrest of the MLA and 11 others in connection with the incident during which the legislator allegedly opened fire at a rival faction led by a real estate business

Justice N Sathishkumar issued the direction on a bail plea moved by the MLA before posting the case for further hearing to Thursday.

Opposing the bail plea, public prosecutor A Natarajan argued that on the day of the clash, Idhayavarman was armed with a pistol and a rifle while his henchman of around 70 persons carried lethal weapons.

Contending that the MLA first fired from his pistol aimed at the complainant Kumar, the businessman with whom he had a property dispute, and then fired his rifle towards the crowd indiscriminately, the public prosecutor claimed that the licence of both guns had expired on December 31, 2019.

Moreover, equipment used to manufacture cartridges for single-barrel muzzle loading gun, four live rounds of pistol, used cartridges and around 3 kg of lead balls were recovered from the accused MLA during investigation, he added.

“The MLA is running a unit and illegally manufacturing ammunition inside his farm house. The police seized and recovered all the ammunition and materials used for production, and another air rifle (.22 calibre) was also seized,” the public prosecutor added while opposing the bail plea.
