This triggered protest by youth from Tamil Nadu, who had completed apprenticeship in the workshop, as they were waiting to be placed in the Railway workshop.

Sources said that there were around 503 posts lying vacant in the Golden Rock Workshop in various sections after the employees got transferred to their home states. So the youth from Tamil Nadu, who had completed apprenticeship in the workshop were eagerly waiting for their employment.

However, on Tuesday, while the lockdown norms are still in place, around 500 youth from various northern states arrived for certificate verification. While the genuineness of their e-pass was in suspicion, the state youth who had completed the apprenticeship gathered in front of the workshop and staged a protest demanding priority in employment.

Sources said that out of the 503 posts, only four candidates were from Tamil Nadu. “We have been fighting for preference of employment for Tamil Nadu people in the PSU units functioning in the state. The north Indian youths have been filled deliberately in the PSU,” said one of the protesters.

He also said that we have a suspicion on how all these had obtained e-passes on a single day to reach Tiruchy. They raised slogans in support of their demands and blocked the main road in front of the workshop.
